Understanding Spirits & Liqueurs - Level 2 WSET

This Level 2 WSET spirits qualification in just 2 days will upskill you in your bar tending and distilling work so that you can produce and understand spirtis and talk knowledgeably and authoritively to customers and clients in the distilling and hospitality world.

Over two fascinating days on this spirits and distilling course you will get to sample some 25 different spirits and liquers and learn how production and ingredients influence the flavours of these classic spirits.  This essential spirits course is ideal for enthusiastic amateurs to sharpen their knowledge but also as an essential background for those people looking at advancing their career working on the bar or leasing or setting up their own pub or bar on this fun and highly interactive spirts course.  It is also a prerequisite for bartenders and aspiring mixoligists to build on their professional understanding of spirits and liqueurs and how they work together to create spell binding cocktails..

This distilling and spirits course also is a great ‘curtain raiser’ for our Practical Distilling Course giving a broad overview of spirit and liqueurs styles and understanding how they can be combined to produce entertaining and highly profitable longer drinks and cocktails.

 

World of Spirit Flavours

 

On this spirits and distilling course you will emerse yourself over the 2 days in the world of spirits flavours and styles learning about the history & how they are distilled and produced.

Over the 2 days you will:

Understand the main production factors of distilling that determine types of spirits.

Understand how the principal types of spirits are distilled and labelled, and describe their key characteristics.

Understand how the principal types of flavoured spirits and aromatised wines are produced and labelled, and describe their key characteristics.

 

Know the common equipment used and the principles involved in the service of spirits.

Over the 2 days you will get to try a minimum of 29 spirits and liquer samples during this spirits course. 

 

Fruit Spirits

Three Cognacs (ideally from the same producer) • VS • VSOP • XO 

A choice of two from: • Armagnac • Grappa • Pisco 

 

Whisky/Whiskey 

USA • Tennessee Whiskey • Bourbon • Rye Whiskey Scotland •

Two Single Malt Whiskies • Blended Scotch Whisky At least one from •

Rum 

• Cuban style of white rum 

• Characterful style of white rum (British or French) 

• Inexpensive, highly coloured dark rum (e.g. a buyers own brand) 

• Aged Spanish style rum 

• Aged British style (one of the aged styles must show rancio) 

 

Tequila and Mezcal 

Two Tequilas 100% agave • Blanco • Reposado or añejo Mezcal • Blanco Artisanal Mezcal Vodka • Neutral style of vodka • Two characterful styles of vodka 

 

Flavoured Spirits and Vermouth

A comparison of a simple and a complex liqueur with a common ingredient.

 

The WSET element of the training will be delivered by Northern Wine School and passing the exam will give you a Level 2 Award in Spirits an internationally recognised qualification in the international hospitality sector.
