There are 2 elements to this two day intensive course which will equip you with all the business and technical essentials of setting up your own microbrewery and enable you to start brewing on a commercial scale:

 

DAY 1 - Thursday (9.30 am - 4.00 pm)

 

Master Brewer Alex Barlow will take you through all the key essentials of setting up your own micro-brewery by drawing on his recent experience of designing and commissioning the new brewery for Purity in Warwickshire and another brewery in Turkey. Most relevantly Alex has just set up his own 15 barrel microbrewery in Sheffield specialising in brewing lager and now is Head Brewer consultant to Triple Point Brewing as well as offering brewing consultancy services worldwide.

 

On this day of “Setting up a Microbrewery Course” you will cover the following:

 

  • Beer tasting and flavour assessment

  • Creating a winning beer and brand

  • Marketing and selling your beer

  • Cleaning and Hygiene

  • Premises suitability and equipment

  • Liquor Water treatment

  • Premises suitability and equipment

  • Racking, casking and fining

  • Business start up advice

  • Useful contacts and sources of info

  • Further study sources

 

A hot lunch will be served in a gastro pub in Bakewell.

 

DAY 2 - Friday (9.45 am - 4.30 pm) Friday

 

This day is designed to give you an essential 'real life' insight into what it is like to set up your own microbrewery and how to learn from the microbrewers experiences.

This day begins with a session from Rob Evans owner of the renowned Peak Ales Brewery on the Chatsworth Estate. Rob takes you through his personal experiences of setting up a brewery using an unconverted farm building through to running his 9 barrel microbrewery along with the latest developments on his move to a larger purpose built premises nearby.  His session includes his DOs & DONTs, an insight into his particular business model and his view on the current market.. Rob gives his top 10 pitfalls to avoid and tips for setting up and running your own microbrewery.  This will be followed by a short Q & A session. 

We will then leave by minibus and  take you on a tour of the brewery answering questions on the way it works and beer production on site.  You will return to Brew-School and then be taken out into Bakewell for a hearty Derbyshire lunch in a local gastro pub.  In the afternoon there will be a short presentation by one of the brewing industries true mavericks Adrian Corke owner of Staffordshire Brewery.  Adrian will tell you of how he moved from being a publican to brewing beer and now owning and running Staffordshire Brewing Supplies one of the UKs largest suppliers of specialist brewing equipment for the microbrewing industry.  Adrian will challenge your perception of how to set up a brewery and what you need to enter the microbrewery industry. 

This final day gives you the experience of meeting a number of microbrewers who have gone through the entire experience of setting up and making their dream a reality.  It also provides you with essential additional insight into equipping your brewery, bottling your beer and promoting your beer brand online.

The 2 day element of the course aims to give people with ambitions of setting up their own microbrewery either now or in the future all the basic skills and knowledge to make their 'brewing dream' a reality.

 The course will take place at Hartingtons School of Food in Bakewell along with various visits to microbreweries within Derbyshire & the Peak District.
